Majika – Spicy Yogurt

Majika used be a regular part of lunch menu in my house. Specially during summer days. The buttermilk soothes the stomach, just perfect in summer. Easy and quick to prepare as the indigents are very very basic.

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • Yogurt: 1 cup
  • Water: 3/4 cup
  • Onion: one small
  • Green chili: 2
  • Ginger: 1/2 inch
  • Curry leaves: 6-7
  • Turmeric powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Oil: 1/2 tablespoon
  • Salt to taste

Preparation

  1. Beat the yogurt, water and salt in a bowl. Keep aside.
  2. Cut the onion, giner and geen chili finely.
  3. Take a small pan and heat the oil.
  4. When the oil is hot add the mustard seeds. Then follow with cumin seeds.
  5. Add the chopped onion and ginger and let it cook till onion is a bit transparent.
  6. Now mix in the turmeric powder, green chili and curry leaves. Cook for 30 seconds and then add it to the yogurt.
  7. Have it as a side dish with rice.

  • This dish was made often at my grandmother’s place. We now do away with the tempering and add the veggies raw. But because this brings back nostalgic memories, i want to try your version with the tempering soon. The picture is lovely with just the right shade of yellow
